I recently did a small painting from a photo I took this past summer on the top of Cadillac Mountain in Maine. I am working out ideas to eventually do a much larger painting of this scene.

 This past August, I decided to spend some time in Maine and I went up on Cadillac Mountain to do some plein air painting. I decided to use watercolors since they are one of the most portable mediums to work with since they are light to carry. This painting is the result of my effort.

 I had recently returned from a trip to Italy and my mind was filled with many images of the olive groves in Tuscany.  When this happens to me,  I fall asleep at night and dream that I am painting in full color. This painting was done as a result of one of my dreams.

 My husband and I wanted to give a special gift to a family expecting a new baby. I did not want to give the usual baby clothes, toys etc.. So, I came up with the idea for a still life for the baby's room. This is the result of my work.

Last week, I had a fantastic time on Monhegan Island painting with my friend, Kathy Morrissey. The flowers were in bloom all over the island. On this visit, I found myself drawn to them even more than the ocean.   Here is a watercolor inspired by the afternoon light. I love the golden sunlight against the bright purple lupines.

I am so excited!! Soon I will be on beautiful Monhegan Island painting with my good friend Kathy Morrissey! We have been trying to organize our schedules so that we could get this thing together.  Finally it is settled and I am looking forward to my stay at the Monhegan House. I am doing something different this time around. I am going to work in watercolors only. I have decided to leave all other mediums back home. I travel light these days. In anticipation of my upcoming trip to the island, I did this painting of Lobster Cove in watercolor.

Today is warm and sunny and whenever the weather is like that I love to play with my watercolors! It's been a long time since I experimented with this medium and I must say it's a challenge. That said I love a challenge and because I am painting just for me, not for any show, I am having a great time playing. Here's today's results.

It's been a long time since I last posted. I have been very busy traveling and painting and participating in family activities. It's that time of year once again, that I am thinking about Monhegan Island. This morning I went into my studio and painted this oil painting from a small watercolor sketch. Boat at Hampton

I am daydreaming a lot these days of warm summer days. Yesterday, I looked at a group of paintings I did during the summer and fall. Some of them were studio pieces and many of them are plein air work that I never got around to photographing. This was one of them. I painted this scene at the end of the street on the bay at Hampton this past summer. There was not much inspiring me that day and then I looked out at this grassy area and spotted this lovely boat just waited there. The light was just beautiful and it made the boat almost glow.

Thinking About Monhegan....

It is so cold outside. I feel rather cooped up today. I want to be outdoors painting. At this time of year my mind always goes back to Monhegan Island.  Probably because my heart is there. For those of you who are not familiar, it is a small place, an island one hour off the coast of Maine. It is now and has been for a long time, an art colony that draws artists, musicians, writers, and bird watchers to it's shores every summer. The scenery from a painter's perspective is spectacular. There is a potential painting around every corner.  I always stay at the Monhegan House.  The wonderful staff, great food, and interesting eclectic group of people who stay there make it for me the best place to be. I have been returning there for many years to be a part of the plein air workshops being taught by my friend and mentor, Stan Moeller. He is a wonderful teacher who goes above and beyond to help his students.  I cannot recommend his workshops enough. We have so much fun, but we work very hard. I always come back having learned something new. I am so looking forward to the warmer weather and to going back. Below is a still life painting I did in the dead of winter last year when I was thinking about Monhegan Island and wondering when I was going back. This is a symbolic painting because each item either comes from or I use while on the island. The title of this painting is "Missing Monhegan".

Still Life with Golden Vase

I find great joy in painting colorful still lifes in the wintertime. This was done from a photo that I took a year ago. Whenever I receive flowers I quickly set up a still life and photograph it so that I have many warm, floral scenes to work with in the dead of winter. This is a very small painting but it packs a lot of punch!

Path to the Sea

This is a favorite little painting that was done very quickly with a large brush to keep the energy going. It is a scene from Kittery Point, Maine at Fort Foster. That is a great place to paint because of the beautiful rocks and winding little paths along the shore.

This was a fun painting to do! I was experimenting with a new textured linen canvas glued to a birchwood board that my artist friend Stan Moeller gave me to play with. Trying out new surfaces is an excellent way to keep the creative juices flowing.

Vine Tomatoes

I saw these tomatoes when I was buying food at the market and I just had to paint them! I get excited whenever I have an excuse to use bold, bright reds in a painting. I also love to paint shadows and these were just to lovely to resist!

Three Acorns

I needed to get a study done and I was at a loss as to what to paint. While walking my dog in my field, I could feel the crunch of acorns under my feet. There seems to be more of them than ever this year. This was my answer. Here is the result.
